The best toys and games get played a hundred times. The worst ones get opened on a birthday, played for an afternoon, and forgotten. We try to recommend toys and games that earn their second and tenth play sessions, because that's what justifies the box on your shelf and the space in your house. For board games, we look at how well they teach, how cleanly they scale across player counts, and how often they make people want to play again immediately. For LEGO, we look at build experience, parts re-usability, and whether the finished model is something you'll display or knock over.
Kids' toys get tested with kids, not just by adults imagining what kids would think. We pay attention to age guidelines, whether durability matches realistic use, and whether the toy genuinely does what its packaging promises. We also call out the toys that look educational but really aren't, and we recommend the ones whose play patterns evolve as a kid grows. Gift-giving is hard, and a thoughtful pick is worth more than ten generic ones.
